On July 26, 1985, a truck driving in the opposite lane rear-ended a 1968 Bonneville station wagon, pushing it into my oncoming lane of travel. Although I have no idea about what happened, the car I was driving, supposedly at about 35 MPH, collided head-on with the Pontiac station wagon. I woke up in Harborview Hospital in Seattle the following day.

Q. What is birth injury malpractice?
A. Birth injury malpractice is a specific type of medical malpractice referring to negligence relating to the delivery of babies, including premature babies. A birth injury malpractice attorney focuses on proving whether a medical professional involved with the care of the baby, such as a physician, physician’s assistant, family doctor, nurse or midwife, failed to follow the acceptable standards of care, resulting in an error and injuries. Any care which fell below the standard of care of a reasonably prudent health care provider may give rise to a cause of action for medical negligence. In delivering a baby, for example, a mid wife is held to the same standard of care as an OB-GYN.

It is not in your best interest to speak to any representative for the negligent party. Do not speak to an insurance company or the claims adjuster. The insurance company has a business interest to maximize your claim and recovery and pay you less. If you wish to speak to the insurance company, talk to a lawyer first to be advised and prepared for questions that likely will be asked. Typically the insurance adjuster will want to take a tape recorded statement. Before giving such a statement , you should be prepared and counseled as to how to answer expected questions. We do not typically suggest you agree to give a recorded statement to any insurance adjuster.

Renton Brain Injury Lawyer: FAQ
Q. What causes a brain injury?
A. Traumatic brain injuries occur when the brain is bruised or shaken by an abrupt impact to the head or violent movement of the head. If the injury is severe enough, a person will black out. Depending on how badly the blood vessels and nerves are stretched and/or torn, injury can be mild or very severe. Acquired brain injuries (ABI) occur without direct trauma to the brain, but rather by lack of oxygen, poisoning (such as lead) or electrocution. Severe loss of blood can also cause ABI. Patients can also suffer from post concussion syndromes after a brain injury. The constellation of symptoms may include head aches, light sensitivity, noise sensitivity, vertigo, dizziness, executive function problems, loss of memory or reduction in attention, concentration, difficulty speaking, walking, or other motor and sensory dysfunction, and/or other conditions.
Q. What are some of the common types of brain injuries?
A. Diffuse axonal injury is one of the most common brain injuries in car accidents. The nerve tissue is twisted as the head is thrown when the vehicles collide. Frequently this nerve damage causes the release of chemicals in the brain that cause further injury. Even though this type of damage rarely shows up in CT Scans and MRIs, it often results in permanent cognitive and behavioral issues.
Q. What are the most frequent causes of traumatic brain injuries (TBI)?
A. According to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, 28% of all traumatic brain injuries are caused by falls, followed closely by motor vehicle accidents at 20%. A further 19% of injuries occur when someone is struck by something. Assaults cause 11% of the TBI cases reported. The remaining 21% occur from miscellaneous causes.

Renton Looking at Other Options to Remove Logjam
The City of Renton is looking at other options to remove a logjam from a footbridge over the Cedar River, now that a contractor has deemed the work to remove it risky.
The logjam built up behind the footbridge to Riverview Park on State Route 169, following last weekend’s major rainstorm that sent the Cedar into a Phase 4 flood alert.
The removal is complicated by the continued high flows on the Cedar.
The river’s level has dropped but still remains above typical flows for this time of year. Friday, the flow was 4,270 cubic feet per second. The previous maximum flow for Jan. 21 was in 1972, at 3,680 cfs.
More rain in the Cascades is expected Friday, which amounts tapering off over the weekend. The National Weather Service has had a flood warning in place all week for the Cedar and Green rivers.
The options include bringing in a crane to lift the logs and other debris from the river, said Todd Black, with the City of Renton Community Services Department.
The crane would sit at or near the parking lot for the park on SR 169. It’s a tight fit, Black said.
“It’s like pick up sticks,” said Black of using a crane. He stressed that’s just one option.
Black said Friday the bridge “is fine,” calling it well-built structurally. The logjam, which continues to build up, is resting against a steel pole designed to take pressure of the bridge in such situationsl
“We are taking it one day at a time,” said Black. He indicated the city could leave the logjam in place “for a period of time.”
There is no cost estimate of how much the removal would cost, he said. The money could come from emergency funds or from insurance, he said.

Kent Boy, Renton Man Hurt in Separate Traffic Accidents
An 11-year-old Kent boy and a 63-year-old Renton man were injured Wednesday in separate car accidents on the East Hill.
The boy was hit by a car as he attempted to run across the street and into the path of the oncoming vehicle, according to a Kent Police media release. The boy suffered severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital by paramedics. He was thrown a short distance from the impact with the car and landed on the road.
The accident occurred at about 4 p.m. in the 23800 block of 100th Avenue Southeast as the boy walked home.
In the second accident, a Renton man was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after a collision between his car and a Kent school bus at about 3:36 p.m. at the intersection of Southeast 224th Street and the Benson Road.
Police and paramedics arrived to find the driver of the car unconscious. Paramedics were able to revive the man. The bus driver, who was alone in the vehicle, was uninjured.
Witnesses told police that the Renton man’s eastbound vehicle reportedly failed to stop for an intersection stop sign and crossed into the path of the school bus.
The cause of both accidents remained under investigation.
The accidents were about 1 mile and 30 minutes apart.
“It’s highly unusual to have two severe accidents so close together in time and location,” said Kent Police Lt. Pat Lowery.

State Trooper Injured in Highway 167 Accident
A Washington State Patrol trooper sustained minor injuries after his car collided with another vehicle at about 10 p.m. Dec. 29 along Highway 167 near the Central Avenue exit in Kent.
The 32-year-old trooper was northbound in the Highway 167 high occupancy vehicle lane to respond to another wreck when the driver of a 2008 Chevrolet Aveo lost control on an icy roadway and the vehicles collided.
The driver of the Aveo, a 49-year-old Renton man, suffered serious injuries, according to the State Patrol. Both men were treated at Valley Medical Center in Renton. The trooper was released with minor injuries, according to an e-mail from State Patrol spokeswoman Julie Startup.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation but speed too fast for road conditions was a definite factor, according to the State Patrol.
